The White Horse Folk Club, Seagrave, Leicestershire.
White Horse Folk was started about 15 years ago by John McDonald and Erik Bellamy.
After John moved on Keith Phelpstead helped Erik to carry the club on. A few years ago
the pub closed downleaving the village with no facilities except a village hall. Some
enterprising folk in the village bought the pub, refurbished it and reopened it. Not just
this but also turned the derelict outbuilding you can see in the photo above into a village
shop with a function room above it.
The folk night restarted about 6 years ago and is now run by Dave and Julia Taylor "On
the Fence"). We run a regular singaround/session on the LAST THURSDAY of every
month. The format is usually a "Heinz 57" where all kinds of acoustic music are welcome
- folk/country/blues/singer-songwriters/tunesmiths, etc. No entry fee just a tin passed
round for "Rainbows" (see below).
More recently we have branched out by running a "mini-festival" over the early May Bank
Holiday each year to raise funds for "Rainbows Children's Hospice". We have also booked
the occasional guest artist in the function room. We have very successful guest nights
featuring PAUL METSERS and KIM LOWINGS and the GREENWOOD, PHIL RILEY, STEVE
CARTWRIGHT, JOHN MONTAGUE and BRIGHT SEASON.
Our most recent venture are 2charity CDs "White Horse Nights-2" - regulars at the club
have each donated a track to make a 16 track compilation - the response to this has
been quite amazing.
Also a compilation by Steve Cartwright and Dave Taylor "Gobbin Down Me Mobile" all
about the downside of life in the 21st century.
